This guide will demonstrate how to set up the LockDown Browser and Live Proctoring settings in Blackboard.
Remember to provide students with instructions and a link to download the correct institutional version of LockDown Browser prior to the test. A web search version of LockDown Browser will not work; students must download the UToledo licensed version to function with our Blackboard environment. To best support the Live Proctoring option, only the Windows or Mac versions of LDB are recommended.
A best practice is to set up a practice exam with LockDown Browser prior to test day so students can troubleshoot any potential issueswith their download of LockDown Browser.
Modifying Exam Settings
Settings for Respondus Lockdown Browser can be found in the test settings. To access the test settings, click on the title for the test you would like to edit.
Click on the cog icon in the Assessment Settings panel in the upper right corner to modify settings.
Under the Assessment Security heading, click on the Respondus Lockdown Browser Dashboard link. This link will open the Lockdown Browser Dashboard where you can apply the settings.
Selecting a Test
You will now see a screen labeled Respondus Lockdown Browser Dashboard that lists the tests in your Blackboard Course. To enable Respondus Lockdown Browser, click on the button to the left of the test name you wish to enable the Lockdown Browser for (1), and choose Settings (2)
Enabling Respondus Lockdown Browser
- Lockdown Browser Settings: Select "Require Respondus Lockdown Browser for this exam" to enable Lockdown Browser. The screen will expand to provide options for Password Settings and Advanced Settings
- Advanced Settings: Click this header to expand this section to show the following options:
- Require Lockdown Browser to view post exam feedback: This option is turned on by default. This setting requires students to use Lockdown Browser to view test results and feedback.
- Lock students into the browser until exam is completed: Selecting this option will prevent students from closing the browser. Selecting this option will expand to show an additional option to enter a password to allow students to exit the exam early. With this item unselected, the default behavior is to require students to type a reason for exiting the exam
- Allow access to specific external web domains: Select this option to allow students to access approved websites during the exam
- Enable Calculator on the toolbar: Select this option to enable the use of an on-screen calculator
- Enable Printing from the toolbar: Select this option to allow prenting.
- Proctoring: To enable remote live proctoring, select Allow Instructor Live Proctoring for this Exam.
The Live Proctoring section will expand with instructions for delivering live proctoring using web conferencing and configuration options:
- Select your video conferencing system: Use the dropdown menu to select which web conferencing application you want to use (Microsoft Teams and Cisco Web Ex are University supported applications).
- Enter in a code in the Start Codebox. You will provide this code to students to begin the test on test day.
- Click if you want additional instructions given to students at start of test (optional).
- Click the Edit Text link to expand and/or alter the additional instructions
- Save and Close.
Finishing Up
Once you have enabled Lockdown Browser, click the X button in the upper right hand corner to close the Lockdown Browser Dashboard.
The text under the Respondus section under Assessment Security will be updated to read: Students will need to use Respondus Lockdown Browser to complete thes Assessment.
When you are finished, click the Save button to save the Lockdown Browser requirement.
After you save the exam settings, you will return to the course content view. A Proctored tag will appear next to the exam due date indicating the Lockdown Browser requirement has been enabled.
The start code is not the same as the exam passcode. The start code you create in the LockDown Browser settings will allow students to begin the test in LockDown Browser on test day.
Remember to set up a scheduled video conference in the application you select for test day and communicate it to students.
Note: in Ultra, Respondus Lockdown Browser setting by default is to require students to go into Lockdown Browser to view feedback and results.
A combination of expired release conditions and the requirement for students to use Lockdown Browser has resulted in users encountering an error and debug code instead of being able to view results. This issue is presently under investigation. One of the following actions can be used as a workaround:
- Removing Release Conditions (instructors can use the option Prevent New Attempts after Due Date to prevent new submissions)
- Remove Require Lockdown Browser to view settings and results from the Lockdown Browser Dashboard for the Exam.
- Set Release Conditions behavior to Show.
