What is Respondus LockDown Browser?

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure online browser for taking tests in Blackboard Learn. Respondus LockDown browser helps provide a level playing field for students taking online exams by by preventing students from opening other web pages, desktop applications, and communication tools. The LockDown Browser is only intended for taking exams that require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser, and is not intended for navigating other areas of Blackboard.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a client application installed on the local computer.

Operating Systems


Windows: 11, 10* and 8.1
* Includes x86 32 and 64bit processors and ARM 64bit processors using x86 emulation.
* Windows 10S is not a compatible operating system, nor can LockDown Browser be obtained via the Windows App Store. At present, support for Windows 10 S Mode isn’t on the roadmap for LockDown Browser.


Mac: macOS 10.12 to 12.0+


ChromeOS: LockDown Browser for Chromebook is supported on ChromeOS version 88 and higher, but we recommend keeping your Chromebook updated to the most recent version that is available.


iPadOS: 11.0+ (iPad only).Instructors must enable this option in each test. Please contact your instructor if you plan to use an iPad to take a test in LockDown Browser.

LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor may continue to run in older operating systems that have reached “end-of-life” but students may encounter unexpected results.

Memory
Windows: 2 GB RAM (A minimum 4gb of available RAM is necessary when using LockDown Browser to take an exam that also uses a webcam.)
Mac: 2 GB RAM (A minimum 4gb of available RAM is necessary when using LockDown Browser to take an exam that also uses a webcam.)

Hard Disk Space
Windows: 200 MB of free hard disk space
Mac: 200 MB of free hard disk space

What is Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor is  a companion product to Respondus LockDown Browser that uses a webcam to monitor student behaviors during an exam. The course instructor can then review the videos after students have completed the exam to note any suspicious behaviors. Students must have a webcam in order to take exams that require Respondus Monitor. The same software is used to access both types of exams.
