Formatting a Word Document for Importing Questions into Respondus
This guide will demonstrate how to format a Word document for importing test or survey questions in Respondus.
Helpful Notes for Formatting Respondus Documents

When authoring a Word Document for importing questions into Respondus, it is recommended to perform the following:
- Turn off automatic numbering and enter question numbers manually.
- Turn on non printing characters by clicking on the button shown in the image above.
- Place a period or closing parentheses after each number or letter, followed by a single space.
- Each question or answer choice should be placed on its own line.
Question Type Abbreviations

For questions other than multiple choice or true/false questions, Respondus uses the following codes to distinguish question types:
- MA = Multiple Answers
- MT = Matching
- F = Fill in the blank
- FMB = Fill in multiple blanks
- ORD = Ordering
- JUM = Jumbled sentence
- E = Essay
To identify a specific question type, type "Type: (question abbreviation)" without the quote marks in the line directly above the question text as shown in the example above.
Question Feedback

Respondus supports two types of automatic feedback for individual questions. The first type of feedback is correct and incorrect answer feedback. To denote correct response feedback, enter a new line between the question text and answer choices, and precede correct feedback with a ~ character and a single space. To denote incorrect response feedback, enter a new line between the question text and answer choices, and precede incorrect response feedback with an @ character and a space. In addition, for multiple choice questions, feedback for individual responses can be entered by entering a line of feedback after each option preceded by an @ character and a single space.
