The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.
The University intends to comply with this act fully. Maintaining confidentiality of student records is everyone's responsibility whether you are faculty, staff, or student. If an employee is found to have violated FERPA, they could be subject to discipline.
If you are unsure whether a record is considered part of a student's educational record, you should not disclose the record before consulting with the Office of Legal Affairs.
