Terminology

Asynchronous learning: Uses the time-delayed capabilities of the Internet for instruction and learning. Tools for this type of learning often involve email, discussion board or other type of bulletin board. 

Blended learning: An approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods.   

Module: A single unit of instruction in a course 

Online learning: Education that takes place over the Internet. 

Remote learning: A temporary move from face-to-face teaching in a physical classroom to a digital space accessed ‘remotely.’ 

Synchronous learning: Instruction and collaboration in “real-time” via the Internet. Tools involving this type of learning include live chat, video conferencing or application sharing, etc.
