Creating a Fill in the Blank Question

This guide will demonstrate how to create a Fill in the Blank Question in Blackboard Learn Ultra. A Fill in the Blank question is automatically graded based on the responses entered by the student.

The Fill in the Blank question type functions the same as a Fill in Multiple Blanks question type in Blackboard Learn Original.

Adding a Fill in the Blank Question to a Test or Assignment

To add a Fill in the Blank Question to the assessment canvas:

  1. Hover over the dividing line between elements and click on the + button.
  2. Select Add Fill in the Blank Question from the menu.

To create a Fill in the Blank Question:

  1. Enter the question text in the space provided. To indicated answer blanks, enclose the terms you wish for students to enter for credit with square brackets. If you wish to accept multiple answers for a given blank, enter a semicolon to separate each answer
    Example: [rose; red flower]
  2. Click on the point value to change the point value.
  3. Click the Next Step link to proceed to the next step where you can modify the answers and scoring options for each answer.

Managing Responses and Scoring

  2. Response type: Use the dropdown menu to choose between exact match (students must type their response exactly as the instructor has the response typed for credit) contains match, and pattern match
  3. Case sensitive: Check this checkbox to require students to match the originally submitted answer capitalization
  4. Scoring Options: The available options are All or Nothing or Allow Partial Credit.

  1. Automated Feedback: Click on the Automated Feedback slider to display feedback to students
  2. Correct Answer Feedback: Enter the feedback to be displayed to students when they provide the correct response.
  3. Incorrect Answer Feedback: Enter the feedback to be displayed to students when they enter an incorrect response.
  4. When finished, click the Save button to create the question.
