Group Sets for Blackboard Ultra

Updated on

In Blackboard Ultra, group sets are collections of groups that an instructor creates to organize students for collaborative work. When assigning groups to an assignment or discussion, you can only link one group set to the activity. This ensures consistency and clarity for both instructors and students.

One Group Set per Assignment

  • What This Means: If you select a group set for an assignment or discussion, all groups within that set are used for the activity. You cannot combine groups from multiple sets for a single assignment.
  • Why It Works This Way: This design ensures:
    • Streamlined grading and submission tracking.
    • Clear organization for students working within their assigned group.
    • Simplified activity management for instructors

Important Note

  • One Group Set per Activity: If you need different groups for different activities, you must create separate group sets for each.
  • Group Modifications: You can adjust group membership in the selected group set at any time, and changes will reflect in the assignment or discussion.
  • Reuse Group Sets: Group sets can be reused across multiple activities. For example, Research Teams can be used for a group assignment, discussion, and peer review.

Common Questions

  1. Can I use multiple group sets for one assignment?
    • No, only one group set can be linked to an assignment or discussion. If you need to use different groups, create a new group set and assign it to a separate activity.
  2. What happens if I change group membership after assigning a group set to an activity?
    • Changes will automatically update in the activity, but its best to inform students of any adjustments.
