Creating Grade Calculation Rules by Category in UCV

Updated on

This guide will demonstrate how to create a grade calculation rule by category, such as setting up the grade book to automatically drop the lowest quiz score for every student's final grade calculations.

The steps below will apply to the entire class. If you wish to do this for a single student, please see the guide for entering exceptions and exemptions.

You are viewing Ultra Course View content.Go to Original Course

Select the Gradebook tab and from any view in Gradebook, select the Gear icon to the upper right of the window to expand the Gradebook settings.

Scroll down in the pop out window and click on Manage overall grade settings in the Overall Grade section.

If you have not yet set up your overall grade column, the system will prompt you to do so when you open the Gradebook settings.

All graded items are categorized. Click on the category of the item you wish to set a calculation rule for (e.g. select Edit calculation rules for Quiz items if you wish to set a rule for those types of graded items)

Dropping Scores from the Category

  1. Click to enable the category calculation rule. The toggle will turn green with a check mark when enabled (grayed toggle when disabled).
  2. Click Drop Scores radio button
  3. Enter a whole number of scores to be dropped (lowest and/or highest scores).
  4. Click continue.

This will drop the designated scores from being computed in every student's Total grade.

Using Only Specific Scores from the Category

  1. Click to enable the category calculation rule. The toggle will turn green with a check mark when enabled (grayed toggle when disabled).
  2. Click Use only radio button
  3. Select to use only either the Lowest score or Highest score from the category.
  4. Click continue.

This will restrict the score to be computed in every student's Total grade to only include either the highest or lowest scored graded item in that category.

Grade calculation rules for categories can be set whether you are using Points or Weighted grading .
