This guide will outline functionality changes and terminology differences between Learn Original and Learn Ultra

Content Creation and Organization

Terminology Changes

Learn Original Learn Ultra Notes
Adaptive Release Release Conditions Edit and limit availability for content for conditions that must be satisfied before content is available to students.
Availability Exceptions Accomodations Ultra course view is now found in the roster for accomodations to set for due date and time limit. 
Blank Page Document Documents in Learn Ultra serve as a replacement for Items and Blank Pages in Learn Original. Documents allow for multiple sections to be added to individual documents, or users can attach files.
Control Panel Settings in course menue Ultra removes the control panel: settings are integrated into the UI.
Course Reports Student Activity Ultra course view uses Student Activity in Activity Stream and within a course.
Date Management Bulk Edit Ultra course view uses bulk edit in course settings.
Item Document Documents in Learn Ultra serve as a replacement for Items and Blank Pages in Learn Original. Documents allow for multiple sections to be added to individual documents, or users can attach files.
Grade Center Gradebook A new feature in Blackboard's Gradebook now highlights the "Overview" section with a "Needs Grading”.
Tests, Surveys, Pools Assessments / Question Banks Pools become Question Banks; tests are redesigned.
Surveys Forms Ultra course view uses forms which includes survey fucntionality. 

Functionality changes

  • Content Folders and Learning Modules can only be nested two levels deep. If your current course has nested folders, you will want to reorganize your course.
  • The Document option replaces the Blank Page, Item, Image, Audio, and Video features in Learn Original
  • Learn Ultra offers a simplified version of the text editor used in Learn Original

Functionality Changes

Only Discussion Boards and Journals are available within Learn Ultra. Blogs and Wikis are no longer available. If you have used Wikis or Blogs, instructors would want to consider redesigning your assignments as either discussion boards journals, or forms.

Assessment Tools

Functionality Changes

Tests in Blackboard Learn Ultra support the following question types: Calculated Formula, Calculated Numeric, Essay, Fill in the Blank, Matching, Multiple Choice, and True/False. Tests made in Learn original which contain unsupported question types will not have unsupported types imported. Unsupported question types include Hot Spot, Jumbled Sentence, Ordering and Quiz Bowl questions.
